贝采里乌斯1779年8月20日出生在瑞典南部的一个名为威菲松达的小乡村里。他在发展化学中作出了重要贡献，他接受并发展了道尔顿原子论，他以氧作标准测定了40多种元素的原子量，他第一次采用现代元素符号并公布了当时已知元素的原子量表，他发现和首次制取了硅、铣、硒等好几种元素，他首先使用“有机化学”概念；他是“电化二元论”的提出者。
